Beauty will save the world…
Through Liturgy.
The liturgical life of the Orthodox Church is lived through the arts: Iconography, Architecture, Woodworking, Textiles, and, most of all, Poetry and Music. Through these, the spiritual veil is lifted, and in some small, distant way, we experience the Kingdom of Heaven.
Music, specifically traditional Byzantine Music – sometimes referred to as “The Psaltic Art” – is the language of our corporate prayer; it is the fabric of the grand tapestry of the Church’s worship, and the vehicle of our sacred texts. Singing in church is the calling of every Orthodox Christian, every member of the congregation; but for those who have the desire for a deeper involvement in the music of the Liturgy, there is a whole world of knowledge and skills to learn.
The Koukouzelis Institute prioritizes small class sizes and individual mentorship in the following subjects:
- Byzantine Music Theory & Practice
- Vocal Technique
- Orthodox Liturgical Order & Meaning
The Institute also offers classes tailored to the musical responsibilities of Priests, Deacons, Readers, and Seminarians.
Byzantine Chant: The Received Tradition - A Lesson Book
This lesson book, written by Koukouzelis Institute Director John Michael Boyer, is a detailed and thorough manual for the notation, theory, terminology, and repertoire of the traditional ecclesiastical music of the Greek Orthodox Church. It is an invaluable learning resource for teachers, students, and researchers alike.
