Byzantine Music I
Introduction to Notation
Beginning Class in Byzantine Notation, Theory & Practice: Students will learn Byzantine musical notation and be able to sight-read notes and rhythm by the end of term. Enrollment in Liturgics is required.

Ornamentation & Expression
Introduction to Ornamentation & Expression: Students will learn the basics of ornamentation and expression, shaping and embellishing melodies in the traditional way. Enrollment in Liturgics is required.

Introduction to Modal Theory: Students will learn the structure, tuning, and melodic patterns of the ecclesiastical Októechos (Eight-Mode system), beginning with the Soft-Diatonic modes. Enrollment in Liturgics I required.

Liturgics II
Continuation of the Liturgical Order: Students will learn the basic structure, content, and theology of the liturgical services of the Triodion, Great Lent, and Holy Week.
One section offered per week, no enrollment limit.

Required for all students enrolled in Byzantine Music courses.
