Byzantine Music I
Introduction & Notation

Beginning Class in Byzantine Notation, Theory & Practice: Students will learn Byzantine musical notation and be able to sight-read notes and rhythm by the end of term. Enrollment in Liturgics III is required.
90-minute class meets once per week.

Ornamentation & Expression

Introduction to Ornamentation & Expression: Students will learn the basics of ornamentation and expression, shaping and embellishing melodies in the traditional way. Enrollment in Liturgics III is required.

Soft-Diatonic Modes

Introduction to Modal Theory: Students will learn the structure, tuning, and melodic patterns of the ecclesiastical Októechos (Eight-Mode system), beginning with the Soft-Diatonic modes. Enrollment in Liturgics III is required.
90-minute class meets once per week for 10 weeks.

Hard-Diatonic Modes

Modal Theory continued: Students will learn the structure, tuning, and melodic patterns of the soft- and hard-diatonic modes. Enrollment in Liturgics III is required.

Liturgics I
The Sacraments

Introduction to Liturgical Order: Students will learn the basic structure, content, and theology of the liturgical services of the Orthodox Church, focusing on the central daily liturgical cycle of Divine Liturgy, Vespers, and Matins (Orthros). One section offered per week, no enrollment limit.

  • Wednesdays, 7:30 – 9:30pm (after Vespers)

  • Tuition free.

  • No enrollment limit.

  • Required for all students enrolled in Byzantine Music courses.

Private instruction and coaching in Byzantine Music, vocal technique, and liturgical order, history & meaning.
